Books, Periodicals, Pamphlets, Ephemera & Subject Files

The Montana Historical Society Research Center holds the nation's largest collection of published materials pertinent to the study of Montana's history. The main collection consists of books, pamphlets, posters, musical scores and periodicals principally related to Montana with supporting materials from neighboring states and provinces. Areas of special strength include locally produced histories, city and county directories, the cattle industry from Texas to Western Canada, the fur trade, and Montana community cookbooks. To search, click the Search the catalog button at right.

The Research Center maintains the state’s largest collection of biographical and subject files related to Montana history. These files are filled with newspaper clippings, magazine articles and miscellaneous materials. For an index of these files, please see our Vertical File Index.

We also house a large collection of printed ephemera consisting of political materials, commercial advertising and local theater programs. For an index of these materials, please see our Ephemera File Index.
