Montana Historical Society Publications seeks to connect Montana's social, political and cultural developments, and offer Native American perspective on Montana's history. With a quarterly magazine and more than sixty books in print, MHS Press has reached a broad audience and earned a reputation as one of the most respected publishers of western history in the high plains and northern Rockies.

Magazine

Published since 1951, Montana The Magazine of Western History showcases the people, places, and events that shaped the state and the western region. In addition to fascinating articles, the magazine features book and movie reviews, commentaries, Montana episodes, and advertising confined to rare and new books, art objects, and other products and events related to American—especially Western—history.

The quarterly magazine is lavishly illustrated with historical maps, drawings, and photographs from the Society's own collections and from other public and private sources. The larger 7⅞" x 10¾" size, along with full-color art on the cover and occasionally inside, sets the magazine apart from most of its genre.

Events

A History of Montana in 101 Places Book Tour

Historian Kirby Lambert, co-author of our latest MTHS Press title, A History of Montana in 101 Places: Sites and Stories from the Montana Historical Society, is taking the popular new book on tour this spring and summer. Presentations are 45 minutes followed by time for questions and book sales and signing.

Browning: Tuesday, Sept. 1, Blackfeet Community College Library, Noon

About Kirby

Now retired, Kirby worked for more than 36 years at the Montana Historical Society where he served in a variety of capacities—as museum registrar, curator of collections, curator of art, and director of outreach and education. He has co-authored several additional publications, including Montana’s Charlie Russell: Art in the Collection of the Montana Historical Society, and is a regular contributor to Montana The Magazine of Western History. Kirby received the Museums Association of Montana’s Peter Yegen, Jr., Award in 2014 and the Governor’s Humanities Award in 2015.
