Looking for a guest speaker to bring civics to life in your classroom?
The League of Women Voters of Montana offers trained, nonpartisan presenters who would love to visit with your students and lead interactive lessons on voting rights, voting and elections, and media literacy.
Their three well-vetted presentations are designed to be engaging, educational, and easy to use in the classroom:
- The Nitty Gritty of Voting - Details the voting process in Montana, culminating with registering students to vote if they’re interested. Perfect for seniors who are turning 18.
- Suffrage Timeline - Overviews American voting rights from 1776 through the present. Each student receives a persona that includes age, gender, race, citizenship, and property status. As the laws change through history, students discover and discuss when their persona has the right to vote. Great American History classes for grades 8-12.
- Media Literacy - Students practice using lateral reading to determine whether information is reliable. They also learn why a free and truthful press is essential to democracy, how disinformation harms people, and how to recognize standards-based journalism. Excellent for grades 9-12.
