Interlibrary Loans
Submit a Request
Requests for library loans must be submitted by a library, either online or by mail.
No faxed or telephoned requests will be accepted.
The Montana Historical Society Research Center loans newspapers on microfilm and oral history tapes to other libraries.
Loan Policies
- Loan requests must come from a library.
- The loan period is 30 days from the ship date.
- Interlibrary loans may not be renewed.
- Interlibrary loan materials are intended for use within the borrowing library.
- Microfilm must be returned in a box, not a mailing envelope.
- Shipments are restricted to 5 reels microfilm or 5 oral history interviews (up to 10 oral tapes) or less per patron.
- New shipments will not be sent until current shipment is returned.
Materials Available for Loan
Newspaper Microfilm
The Library maintains a large collection of Montana newspapers on microfilm. Almost all of the more than 20,000 reels of microfilm are available for interlibrary loan.Oral History Tapes (excluding restricted-use tapes)
Since the 1880s, the Montana Historical Society has conducted oral history interviews with Montanans from across the state, and from various walks of life. Interviews recorded on tapes are available for loan.
Loan Charges
A small administrative fee is charged for out-of-state shipments. Whether or not this fee is passed on to the patron is left to the discretion of the borrowing library.
- In-state Libraries - No charge
- Out-of-state Libraries - $10 per shipment (5-reel maximum limit)
- Out-of-country Libraries - $20 per shipment, payable in US funds (5-reel maximum)
Payment
- Prepayment is not required
- Charges will be invoiced and sent at time of shipment
- Late fees: .50 cents per item per day
