The Research Center is a non-circulating library, archive, and photo archive with collections available for onsite use as well as digitized materials available online.
Important notice: Saturday Hours to be Discontinued and Photograph Archives Reference Hours to be by Appointment Only. As a result of legislation passed by the 2017 Legislature and signed by Governor Bullock, the Montana Historical Society is facing severe budget cuts. Unfortunately, this means that positions and services must be cut and, effective August 18, 2017, we will no longer be able to offer public reference hours on Saturdays or in the Photograph Archives. Access to photographs will still be available through the main reference room. We are deeply distressed by this development and apologize for the inconveniences imposed.
