Cover Art Description:
A popular illustrator of western themes whose work appeared in Sunset and Harper's Monthly, Maynard Dixon had by 1912 turned his attention to fine art, with results that include the painting reproduced on the front cover courtesy a private collector. Created in his studio from sketches Dixon made on a trip to Idaho and western Montana in 1909, The Palomino Mare (1914, oil on canvas, 20" x 30") was one of three paintings Dixon exhibited in the Panama-Pacific International Exposition held in San Francisco in 1915. With its colorful palette and impressionistic forms, The Palomino Mare represents an imaginative recasting of a classic western scene.
