front cover: Montana The Magazine of Western History, Spring 2001

Cover Art Description:

In January 1951 the first issue of what was then known as The Montana Magazine of History (now Montana The Magazine of Western History) rolled off the press. On its cover was a simple wood-grain pattern--chosen to call attention to the historical importance of the timber industry--surprinted with the magazine's title and the Montana Historical Society's seal (reproduced on this issue's front cover as part of the fiftieth anniversary logo). In honor of that first issue, and our fiftieth anniversary, we've chosen to revisit the timber theme, with cover art by Maynard Dixon. Northern Forest, Montana, 1917 (oil on canvas, 30"x 20", from a private collection, photograph courtesy of Mitchell Brown, Fine Art, Inc., Santa Fe, New Mexico) was painted by Dixon on his only trip to Montana, a trip to Glacier National Park sponsored by the Great Northern Railway during which Dixon produced artwork promoting travel to the area.
