The Home Fires: Montana in World War II - Webquest: Propaganda

Propaganda is a soft weapon;
hold it in your hands too long,
and it will move about like a snake,
and strike the other way.
Jean Anouilh

You can tell the ideals of a nation by its advertisements.
Norman Douglas, South Wind, 1917

All lies and jest, still, a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest.

"Sold" on Unity

Introduction

Should the President of the United States engage the country in a propaganda campaign for the purpose of unification … or not?

Current newspaper headlines and TV news shows declare:
GOVERNMENT FEARS LACK OF CITIZEN UNITY and POLARIZED LEGISLATORS AND THEIR CONSTITUENTS BOG DOWN CONGRESS.

The President privately expresses fears that if and when this country must face a grave threat, the people’s lack of cohesiveness could lead to catastrophe. In order to gather information and formulate direction, the President has commissioned a team of four individuals to study the highly successful U.S. propaganda campaign of World War II - a movement that galvanized the nation and helped steer it through a precarious time. The President wants recommendations on the potential for successfully utilizing a similar campaign now …should circumstances in the country warrant it.
